Mapuche Onomastics Study
The linguist and Master of Letters at UFSM in Brazil, Necul Painemal, developed the study “Mapuche Onomastics”.
The work, which spanned more than three years, drew on documents from the General Archive of Indigenous Affairs of CONADI (National Corporation for Indigenous Development), land grant titles, fieldwork in communities, and other sources. This analysis resulted in a list of more than 8,000 surnames with their meanings, along with the derivation of certain surnames whose spelling has changed over time.
Onomastics deals with the study and investigation of etymology, the study of names as words, their transformation, and the morphology or form of people’s given names. It is also a linguistic expression that conveys a specific concept, starting from meanings to study the signifiers, that is, the functions of the words used as names.
